AuH2O is an eco-friendly and socially conscious clothing store owned by Kate Goldwater. AuH2O is “Goldwater” in chemical symbols: Au=Gold, H2O=water. Kate Goldwater makes all AuH2O clothing from recycled materials, such as old t-shirts, sweaters, ties, vintage slips and dresses, costumes, curtains and other unwanted fabric. Goldwater sews everything herself at her store, so no sweat-shop labor, mass-production, or carbon-dioxide emitting shipments are involved. Plus, every piece is one-of-a-kind. AuH2O clothing also advertises feminist and political beliefs, with slogans such as “Reproductive Freedom Fighter” and “OBAMA” on shirts and dresses. AuH2O is not the typical East Village boutique. If you like something but it doesn’t quite fit, Goldwater can alter it for you on the spot free of charge. Long dresses can become shorter, straps can be added to tube tops, and jeans can be turned into skinny jeans. If a piece is too small, Goldwater can reproduce it with similar materials. Also, prices are reasonable at $15-$28 for a shirt and $35-$50 for a dress. AuH2O clothing is unique, environmental, sweat-shop free, and unlike most in this category- affordable! We also carry consignment jewelry, handbags, belts, clothing, and vintage items. Vintage bags cost around $25, earrings are $7, and necklaces are between $10-$20. AuH2O is located on 84 E. 7th St. between 1st and 2nd Avenue. Come by, or shop online HERE: http://auh2odesigns.etsy.com
About The Owner/Designer Kate Goldwater is the owner and designer of AuH2O. She’s a 25-yr old graduate of NYU, originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She lives in Brooklyn, runs her store, and plays a lot of sports. Kate has been making clothing for several years. Her first piece was a pair of pants made out of a Fisher-Price tent in eighth grade. They were held together by staples and duct tape until her mother bought her a sewing machine for her 13th birthday. At NYU, she combined her sewing hobby with her passion for feminism, activism and the environment. She designed her own major in “Art and Clothing for Social Justice,” making clothing and art to display her political beliefs, including: reproductive rights, violence against women, and cruelty to animals. Her artwork was featured at the online archive and museum of women’s health and Speaking Up, Speaking Out… Against Domestic Violence and she designed costumes for politically-motivated theater company Stone Soup Theatre Arts. She interned for NARAL Pro-Choice NY, the Jewish Women’s Archive, and volunteered for Planned Parenthood as a clinic escort. Of course, her sewing machine is covered in “Keep Abortion Legal” stickers. After graduating in May 2006, Goldwater opened up her store, AuH2O, in October ‘06. Since then, she has had dozens of fashion shows, has received really great press and store reviews, been rejected from Project Runway twice (and blogged about it at Huffington Post,) and has finally opened up an online store on etsy. She was recently featured on CNN, so it looks like AuH2O's working out. Other than sewing, painting, and feminist activism, Kate loves playing sports, especially soccer, tennis and handball. She does NOT appreciate hearing that she’s “good for a girl.” Check her blog, blog.auh2odesigns.com, to keep up with her latest fashion shows, sales, events, press and photos.
